To define racism only through extreme groups and their extreme acts is akin to defining weather only through hurricanes. Hurricanes are certainly a type of weather pattern - a harsh and brutal type - but so too are mild rainfalls, light breezes, and sunny days. Likewise, racism is much broader than violence and epithets. It also comes in quieter, everyday-ordinary forms.

Maybe I wasn’t losing everything. But I didn’t try to save it.

I am awfully greedy; I want everything from life. I want to be a woman and to be a man, to have many friends and to have loneliness, to work much and write good books, to travel and enjoy myself, to be selfish and to be unselfish… You see, it is difficult to get all which I want. And then when I do not succeed I get mad with anger.

— Simone de Beauvoir

Oh people say ‘oh you’re so tall and oh my god you’re so skinny’, that’s not nice because you don’t say to anybody ‘oh my god you’re so fat’ like you know. I hated it when people say to me ‘oh my god you’re so skinny’, I hated it. Now they say it too but I know I think yeah great thanks

It’s weird to feel like you miss someone you’re not even sure you know.

What if I slept a little more and forgot about all this nonsense.

— Franz Kafka, The Metamorphosis

If anybody could have saved me it would have been you. Everything has gone from me but the certainty of your goodness. I can’t go on spoiling your life any longer. I don’t think two people could have been happier than we have been.
